Cookie Fortunes I keep around

Fortune Cookies are totally cheesy, fake as hell and generally a kind of joke in the grand scheme of things (and sometimes not so grand). Fortune cookies have been summarized as being “introduced by the Japanese, popularized by the Chinese, but ultimately they are consumed by Americans.” — From Fortune Cookies Wiki Article Despite all of the history and relevancy of these sometimes delicious and often stale cookies, they can be a lot of fun and sometimes actually apply to the life of the consumer. Here are a couple fortune cookie fortunes that I keep taped on the inside of my notepad cover: An important business venture may soon develop for you. Your golden opportunity is coming shortly. Window Shade Recalls…wtf?

December 15th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

Rant Status                  = Extreme Likelihood to Offend  = 93% This morning I was watching the Today Show’s coverage of the window shade recall.  I was instantly appalled, frustrated, and infuriated at the same time.  I still cannot believe that this was allowed to happen. Basically, the whole story boils down to little kids getting the string wrapped around their necks and dieing. This in itself is horrible, I never want to hear about another accidental child death again. The thing that bothers me about the fact that a recall was put into effect is that ALL of these deaths could have been avoided if the parents would have been paying attention.  Why are child services organizations around the country not… » Read More

The next conversation over

I took the day off today so I could catch up on some things, go to the allergist, and go to a concert tonight.  This gave me the opportunity to sit in rooms with large numbers of people I don’t know.  Meaning, I worked at Panera and then the public library because Panera’s wifi stopped working for me.  I took lunch and went to a new-to-me restaurant called “Tuk Tuk Thai“.  Their green curry is AWESOME by the way. If you have been to Tuk Tuk, you know that the seating there can be a little tightly spaced.  This led me to sitting in between a couple and two guys who seemed to work together.  Right about the time I… » Read More

How do we learn?

September 21st, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

Kids learn by observing the people around them, their parents.  This is a direct reason to why kids learn to resent the things that their parents do, be it a tick a mannerism or some catch phrase that they use.  It is boredom of the same old thing which turns into resentment because it won’t stop.  This is also a direct reason why kids claim that they will never be like their parents and then end up doing exactly the same things. You can tell me I am wrong about the following, but this is based on my observations, things I learned in school and various other places where I have picked up on human behavior conversations, books and talks…. » Read More

An update on my friend

September 15th, 2009 § 1 comment § permalink

I talked about my dilemma with my friend Brandon once before. I sent Brandon a letter with some paper and envelopes that had the stamps printed on them.  Everything, including the letter was sent back to me as contraband.  Along with that, I got another letter from Brandon. He is ready to be done with the life he has, in fact he is scared out of his mind.  I am not grateful for the fact that he is afraid for his life, but I am grateful that he is ready to get straight and get the hell out of where he is. I will have to respond to his most recent letter and send him the previous one with it,… » Read More

This is not form validation — and how to fix it

August 31st, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

I was working on a site and noticed something that concerned me.  This is fodder for TheDailyWTF and makes me worry for the fate of any person who receives the results of forms with [non-]“validation” like this. The form element: <select name="favorite-color">  <option>Favorite Color – Choose One</option>  <option value="blue">Blue</option>  <option value="red">Red</option>  <option value="orange">Orange</option>  <option value="green">Green</option>  <option value="black">Black</option> </select> Here is what was in the processing script: switch ($_POST["favorite-color"]) {  case "blue":  case "red":  case "orange":  case "green":  case "black":   $data["favorite-color"] = $_POST["favorite-color"];   break; } … //data is appended to a string – matt's comment not a "real" comment in the script $string .= $data['favorite-color']; So… What is wrong with this? OMG what isn’t wrong with it? The select… » Read More
