Tony and I often chat on IM, email, phone, and now Twitter. Usually, we are joking around or talking about some crazy idea we have. Every once in a while we will chat about more serious topics. This is a good example of one of those times.
Tony Kimberly: Can I ask you a weird question?
Matt Bernier: sure
Tony Kimberly: What’s important to you?
Matt Bernier: What do you mean by that?
Tony Kimberly: Uhh, in the long run, in life. What’s important to you.
Tony Kimberly: I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching and deciding what I want out of life and what I want to do/accomplish
Matt Bernier: To be happy, around the people I love, and to be comfortable in the life I have
Tony Kimberly: Kind of separate of that (but not) I had a good discussion with Beth earlier about Values, which seems kind of bigger. So I was trying to think of it as ‘Guiding Principles’
Matt Bernier: And to know that I earned my position in life with the feeling of accomplishment that goes with earning it.
Tony Kimberly: I like that
Matt Bernier: You gotta know where you want to go, to know how you are going to get there
Tony Kimberly: yeah, so I’ve known for a long time some of the things I want to accomplish in life but I feel like I haven’t defined some other things that I want to experience. Its really weird because I’ve always pictured myself doing these things alone and I recently realized that when I picture my future I still picture it alone.
Matt Bernier: I do that a lot too. I think that is what many of Mel and my fights are really about. Much of that comes from the fact that when you are working towards your goals, you do it by yourself. Whether or not you plan on taking the results of those goals and making them available for more than yourself does not really matter when you are working and have your head down.
Matt Bernier: I just make a point to remember that the things I am doing now are for both Melissa and myself. This actually gives me more motivation to do them right, and push them out in the world
Tony Kimberly: Yeah, I think that’s awesome.

I sent this to Alice 105.9 via their website’s contact form:
Dear Alice 105.9,
I have created a team on Movember.com of guys who are going to participate in No Shave November. Then on the 30th we will shave our faces into Awesome Metal Mustaches.
Movember.com raises money every November for Men’s Cancer charities. This year they are raising money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
We hope to raise as much money as we can and make a huge impact on Men’s Cancer. This is a great cause and I have a bunch of guys who are really excited to get the word out and raise some money.
Our team would love to ask for your help and support either by asking some of the guys at Alice to participate on the team, advice, or anything else that you could do would be great.
Thank you for your time,
Matt Bernier
Metal Mustache Team: http://www.movember.com/r/51412
I would love to see Alice 105.9 get involved in the team in any way possible and really appreciate them taking the time to check out my request.

I sent this message through the Floyd’s 99 Barbershop website’s contact form:
Dear Floyd’s,
I have two things for you, first a compliment and second a question.
First, I came into one of your downtown barbershops before my wedding and had an awesome shave. I looked great in my pictures and got some great compliments on the shave.
Second, I am organizing a Movember.com team for this year. Movember seeks to help eradicate and teach about Men’s Cancers including prostate cancer. My team is going to be growing our beards out “No Shave November” style and then chopping them down to Awesome Metal Mustaches on the 30th. We will be raising money for Movember.com and The Lance Armstrong Foundation through our efforts. I was wondering if Floyd’s would be interested in helping us out with our team?
Anything you could provide, be it advice, support, or anything at all would be great. I am asking you guys because you are a staple in Denver and provide a great service.
Thank you!
Matt Bernier

I think it would be great to get these guys involved in the efforts for Movember and The Lance Armstrong Foundation!

I was replying to a friend on Twitter using trim, and I had a <script> tag in the post. I realized when I submitted that the tag made everything after it in my tweet dissapear. If you want to see the actual tweets, you can find them in my twitter feed here: Matt Bernier’s Twitter Feed
First thougt was, “No Way!”. Second thought was, “What Else Can I do?”.
So, I tried basic HTML with this tweet:
-
<h2>Testing whether HTML breaks tr.im</h2> B/c my
-
<script> tag did earlier</script>
-
<span style="color:blue;"> ScreenShot coming</script>
This got me this result:

Just HTML in the Tweet
Then I tried an alert:
-
<script type="text/javascript">
-
alert('does this work?');
-
</script>
That got me this result:

Javascript Alert in a tweet
Then lastly, I tried a little more JS, pay attention though. To make it fit, I used a tr.im URL!!
-
<script type="text/javascript">
-
document.body.select('img').each(function(e){e.src="http://tr.im/evmz"});
-
alert('check the images')
-
</script>
Which got me this result:

Replaced Tr.im's images with Google's!
I have submitted this information to tr.im. I did very mundane, topical things to the page I was looking at, and did not even attempt anything more dangerous. My hope is that you will see the humor in this, urge tr.im to fix this issue and to continue the amazing job that they do.
UPDATE: The Tr.im developers are quick to read their emails, respond, and fix issues. It took all of twenty minutes from when I sent the email to them, for a response saying that this issue was fixed.

This post is a continuation of my post about managing my tasks, projects, and responsibilities. There are links to the other posts at the bottom of this post.
Email
I have clients that insist on using just email to communicate, which is fine with me because I use GMail, which lets me keep emails in threads instead of as individual emails. This makes keeping a conversation in control very easy. However, my inbox is constantly full. For the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that when I empty my inbox out before bed I have between 20 and 50 emails waiting for me in the morning. Most of them are status updates, automated messages, or twitter messages but it is still a lot of emails to go through in the morning and my inbox would get full of emails.
I needed a way to organize the emails, so that I could find them easily and reliably. I also wanted the emails to be categorized automatically without missing them. GMail to the rescue! They have a labels feature, which can be automated with filters. I found that the filters got to be too numerous though, and I was wishing for nested folder (well labels here) functionality. I quickly went searching and found a Firefox plugin that will turn your labels into “folders” and will allow nesting. The plugin is called Better GMail.
All I had to do was format my labels like a directory path. A good example is “Clients/Matt Bernier”. When I view my Gmail account without the plugin this can be annoying, but I just make sure I have the plugin, and problem solved.
With the filters I am able to make them apply and still leave the label in the inbox, so I almost never miss an email. The only time I would is if it went to spam, which almost never happens.
